Newsletter Spring 2016

Spring 2016 at Academy of Sound

"Weather" or not you can believe it, Spring is here and it's time for another Academy of Sound newsletter! Here are some of our headlines...

Temporary location
Academy of Sound has relocated to 408 N. Bergamont Blvd. in Oregon, as of February 2016. We are grateful to our friends at First Presbyterian Church for hosting us while we search for a more permanent facility solution.

Featured Students: Zoey & Jaiden M.

Zoey (violin) & Jaiden (guitar)

ZOEY

Grade this year: 1st grade
School attending: Prairie View Elementary
Favorite subject in school: Music
Other activities: Volleyball, soccer, swimming, skating, doing art projects and singing.
If I were an animal, I would be: A bird because they fly.

Famous quote: "When can we go to Disney?!"

What I like best about AOS music lessons is:  I like that I am learning to play songs, and my teacher is nice. I also get to color during my brothers lesson and that is a lot of fun!

JAIDEN

Grade this year: 3rd grade
School attending: Prairie View Elementary
Favorite subject in school: Gym
Other activities: Soccer, Guitar, Swimming, Reading, Playing Video Games
If I were an animal, I would be: A guinea pig because they are really cute.

Famous quote: "I want to go to Disney World!"

What I like best about AOS music lessons is: Adam teaches really great music and makes it fun to practice. I like that he gives me new ideas to play around with after I finish practicing.

These kids love Disney almost as much as they love music!!

Reminder: Children must be attended in the waiting area

Please be sure that all students are accompanied by an adult from the family to supervise, when waiting before or after lessons. Also, no unenrolled students (friends or siblings not studying with us today) are allowed at Academy of Sound unless accompanied by an adult. This is to keep our learning environment supportive and safe for all, and as a courtesy to our colleagues at First Presbyterian Church, whose facilities we are sharing.

Meet Blakeley Menghini, our new violin & viola instructor

Blakeley Menghini received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Viola Performance from Greenville College in 2011, where she studied with Victoria Voumard. She then studied with Tony Devroye (of the Avalon Quartet) as she earned her Master of Music degree and Performance Certificate in Viola from Northern Illinois University in 2014. Taking a break from school, Blakeley spent a year teaching private lessons in public schools, private schools, and her home in southern Illinois. She also taught at Greenville College, where she directed the GC Chamber Orchestra and served as adjunct professor of Violin and Viola. In addition, she created and taught a Music History and Appreciation course at the Lahr-Well Academy in Edwardsville, IL. Blakeley is now a DMA candidate at UW-Madison, where she studies viola with Sally Chisholm. As the violist of UW-Madison's Hunt Quartet, she is able to share her love of music with elementary students across the Madison region. She has a passion for teaching and the character building that goes hand-in-hand with learning an instrument. Blakeley has earned Suzuki Method certification in violin (books 1-6) and viola (books 1-3), and Musikgarten certification for the Cycle of Seasons curriculum. She has experience with students of all ages, from 5 to 75, and believes that there is no person lacking potential for musical ability. WELCOME, MS. BLAKELEY!

    Absences - your call!

As we announced at the beginning of the year, absences are now under your control. Each student will be offered the opportunity to make up 1 lesson per semester, no matter the absence reason. So families can decide!

    REMEMBER:
    • Absences must be reported before 12pm (noon) on the lesson day in order to qualify for a makeup lesson offer.
    • Call 608-371-9030 or write to office@academyofsound.org to report absences and request makeup lessons.
    • Be sure to request the makeup at the time the absence is reported. We will keep track in case you forget whether you've used your one absence per semester.

Always contact the AOS office (instead of private teachers) with scheduling questions and updates.

    Phone: 608-371-9030
